Message Ring lands can be cracked on a piston and be bearly noticable. Look closely for fractures in the ring lands. If you see one replace the pistons. Look for broken compression rings.(I'd replace the rings if reusing stock pistons) Look at the condition of the cylinder walls and the piston skirt. Feel the cylinder walls for waves, look for scrapes from piston rattle or slap. Once the bearings are removed look for wear on the crankshaft journals.

Make sure the 3 oil squiters are not clogged. block one side and blow through then block the other make sure none have resistance, if any attempt to clean or just replace

Leave the cams in the heads, turn the cams, open the valves. Look for anything odd out on the valve surfaces
